Two tiers. Auckland, tuition plus living, runs ~NZD 54,000โ€“71,000 a year (~INR 30โ€“40L). Smaller cities like Hamilton, Palmerston North, or Dunedin bring it down to ~NZD 40,000โ€“57,000 (~INR 22.5โ€“32L). As a rule NZ lands ~NZD 15,000โ€“20,000 a year cheaper than an equivalent Australian programme, which is a real part of its appeal.
Beyond tuition and rent: the visa fee from NZD 850 (~INR 48K), IELTS or PTE ~INR 19K, document attestation and courier INR 8โ€“15K, a one-way Delhi to Auckland flight INR 45โ€“75K, and a settling-in kit NZD 800โ€“1,500. Mandatory health and travel insurance is usually bundled into your tuition invoice. We give you the full list up front so nothing ambushes you in month one.
Hamilton, Palmerston North, Dunedin, and Christchurch beat Auckland on both fees and rent, with rooms around NZD 200โ€“300 a week, and smaller-city unis like Waikato, Massey, and Otago charge less than Auckland. The trade-off is a quieter setting and a smaller (though still active) Indian community. We'll weigh that against your budget and course honestly.
A meaningful share of living costs, not your tuition, and we'll always be straight about that. You can work up to 25 hours a week in semester at the NZD 23.95 minimum wage (from 1 April 2026), roughly NZD 600 a week before tax. We'd rather you plan your funds around tuition and rent than around a part-time job that can take a few weeks to land.
A few worth chasing. The NZ Excellence Awards cut up to NZD 20,000 (~INR 11L) off fees for Indian students; the University of Auckland and Waikato run their own awards of NZD 10,000โ€“15,000; and most universities offer ~INR 2โ€“9L tuition relief for strong academics, with Massey, Waikato, and Lincoln especially generous. We apply for every one you're eligible for.
