Auckland leads at QS 67, but the rest own their fields: Otago for medicine and dentistry, Canterbury for civil engineering, Waikato for cybersecurity, Massey for agriculture and aviation. We pick by course strength, not just the headline rank.

Most ask for IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 for undergraduate and many postgraduate courses, and some professional degrees want more (NMIT, for instance, asks 6.5). It's a slightly gentler bar than Australia's Go8. We confirm the exact requirement for your course and campus before you book the test.

Universities are research-led and award degrees up to PhD; the 8 public unis are what most Indian students target. Polytechnics (ITPs) like Otago Polytechnic, Manukau, and Ara are applied and industry-linked, and usually cheaper at ~NZD 20,000–32,000 a year. Both can lead to post-study work rights.
